The Online Ad-Video Takeover by…Celebrities

It’s not surprising that celebrity faces are becoming  more common in online video ad spots, as reported by The New York Times. It makes sense. After all, an advertiser gets to work with a brand that already has equity. It takes less work and dollars to get the audience on-board, to build that much needed bond of trust and fascination.

Still, the troubling aspect is that up-and-coming actors are now being pushed aside for more familiar faces and brands. I think there is something to be said for the ability of an unknown actor (with little-to-no-brand equity and BAGGAGE) to visually shape and define a product and service through just good/funny/fascinating ACTING.  At the end of the day,  the content and the ability for it to spur conversation (irregardless of the celebrity factor) is what matters most.
